Almost without intending it, certainly without planning it, I accepted a role in the great work of liberation of my country and a part in shaping her political future. But it all began modestly, on a small and very human scale, in the circumstances I encountered or, perhaps more accurately, that encoun tered and gradually impelled me, in the course of my life in the mining community.
